TECH INSPECTION AND IMPOUND
Why do ISDE bikes go through technical inspection? The stewards are not just making sure the bikes are quiet and safe. ISDE rules state that the major components of the bike not be changed. The inspectors mark major components such as the frame, engine cases, hubs, exhaust with a special paint and scratch the rider’s number in the paint with a wooden stylus. These components are checked again at the end of each day to be sure that they match.
A noise test is also an important part of the inspection. Each bike must not exceed 96 dba with the sound meter held 20 inches from the end of the exhaust system. At the end of each day, bikes are randomly tested and must pass before the bike is allowed to enter impound. The bikes are locked up each night in impound. The is allowed to enter impound 15 minutes before his/her start time. The bikes are pushed to a maintenance area and each rider will have approximately 10 minutes before their start minute comes up.
