Even though the course for Day 5 was new it still was a challenge for the riders and a beating for their machines. At this point in the race its going to be hard for the US Team to make up some ground in the overall standings. Rookie Junior, Cory Buttrick is proving that he has the speed to hang with the big boys and has been putting down some really fast time. A tree root in Portugal has a small piece of Timmy Weigand’s pinky finger, but Weigand dug deep and finished the day for the team.

Despite Kurt Caselli’s best efforts today and winning two special tests out right, the team finds themselves down in 7th position as they go into the final day. Finland has rebounded from the loss of Juha Salminen and they are now back up in 4th place. France still has a strong hold on the top spot followed by Italy in 2nd and Australia in 3rd. Portugal and Sweden are just ahead of USA in 5th and 6th.

The US Junior Trophy Team and Women’s Cup Team both maintain their postions. Cory Buttrick, Jamie Lanza, and Russell Bobbitt are putting in some good times and are just 5:26 behind Junior leaders Spain and France.

Maria Forsberg is leading the US Women’s Cup Team with Lacy Jones and Amanda Mastin. The US Women are in a solid 4th. France continues to dominate the Women’s Cup and are likely to be the winners by the end of the last day tomorrow. Sweden and Australia are in 2nd and 3rd.

You can see the Special Test 1 Results here. Caselli also had a few other good time in the tests today and won the last special test of the day [Special Test 7 Results here] today on Day 5. Destry Abbott and Junior rider Russell Bobbitt had a fairly consistent in the tests today. ISDE rookie and USA Junior Cory Buttrick is showing that he really has the speed to hang with these guys. On Special Test 6 today he placed 4th overall, the next fastest American on that test was Caselli in 7th [Special Test 6 Results here]. Reports are trickling in that Timmy Weigand smashed his hand and suffered a minor injury to his finger, we will post more when we get more information.
