“I like this race; I did good here last year and I wanted to win today,” said Lafferty. “We had the bike set up good and I just tried to ride a smart race.”

In the number two spot was the series champion and points leader Russell Bobbitt. Bobbitt rode a KTM 250 XC and finished with a score of 33:54.

“I had a good race,” Bobbitt said. “I got fifth here last year, so I feel pretty good about second. Mike rides good up here and I knew I was going to have work hard.”

A recent announcement from Amaury Sports Organisation (ASO), promoters of the Dakar Rally, stated that they will enforce a limit of 450cc for single-cylinder motorcycles effective in 2010. Following the announcement, KTM declared complete withdrawal from the race, slated to take place in South America in January of 2010. KTM Austria’s race team manager and rally coordinator Alex Doringer talked more about KTM’s decision to withdrawal from the Dakar Rally – a decision they felt was the only realistic option given the circumstances by Dakar Rally promoters – and what the manufacturer with such a heavy investment in rally racing plans to do next.

“I think it’s easy to explain after the decision [ASO] made to reduce the capacity on the engines down to 450,” Doringer said. “We don’t agree with the decision. The points they gave us as to why they made the decision; we don’t confirm them. They’re talking about safety, they’re talking about money for private riders and this isn’t true that it’s safe or cheaper.”

It’s official: Off-road hero David Knight and the BMW race team have parted ways. According to press releases from BWM and on David’s websites, the two-time World Enduro and GNCC Champion and BMW have parted ways by “mutual consent” with “immediate effect”. This means that as of this weekend’s GP of Slovakia, Knighter will no longer be contesting the ’09 WEC series.

Having joined the BMW Motorrad Motorsport team at the beginning of this year with the goal of bagging another WEC title, Knighter was plagued by bad results, allegedly caused by his failure to gel with the BMW motorcycle. A quote from the Manxman says it all: “I simply felt that I couldn’t move forward with the bike. My performances weren’t what I, or the team, hoped they’d be, which I think everyone could see. The bike simply didn’t suit my way of riding, it’s as simple as that. Like I said the team worked hard to give me what I wanted but in the end I felt it was best that I walked away. I’d like to wish BMW all the very best for the rest of this season….”

( Story and Photos: Mark Kariya )

Red Bull KTM’s Mike Lafferty put himself into a hole when he broke his leg before round four of the AMA/FMF Racing National Enduro Series, but after missing that round and returning for round five, he’s done no wrong in pulling himself out. He won round five—his first National back—and he backed that up by winning round six, the Foggy Mountain Breakdown National, presented by Pivot Pegz, in Blain, Pennsylvania. In doing so, he sliced his deficit in series points to a single point behind his teammate, Russell Bobbitt, who had an off day in PA, finishing fifth—his first time off the podium this season. Going into the event put on by the Susquehanna Off Road Riders, Bobbitt enjoyed a 15-point lead.

Lafferty and his 450 XC-F got to work right away and set the pace, dropping six points in the first section while the closest anyone else got was a seven. That set the tone for the day as the eight-time and defending series champ put in the best time in all six tests over the 78.8 miles of often rocky Pennsylvania woods made more demanding by the heat and humidity.

Mike Lafferty won his second National in a row and his fourth in the six rounds so far, drawing to within a point of the series points lead.

“It’s really hard to get your confidence up because it’s not forgiving here at all; it’s really hard to find traction and be smooth,” Lafferty said. But two weeks of testing in the area with local racer Jerod Stoner paid big dividends as Lafferty’s bike setup—for which he is notoriously picky—seemed spot-on all day, and he cruised to a score of 35.

Bobbitt, on the other hand, experienced only frustration on his 250 XC, the 2006 champ able to spend only a short time at Stoner’s training grounds. “I would’ve liked to have a couple more days riding in that stuff,” Bobbitt lamented, adding, “I just kind of felt like a squid all day.”

The presence of Lafferty, Bobbitt and several other regulars on the National tour apparently rubbed off on Stoner, as the teenager put in an inspired ride aboard after settling in and finished with 39 points, as did fellow KTM 300 XC racer Brooks Hamilton. After adding up the tie-breaker points, Stoner got the nod for the runner-up spot on the podium.

After beating Lafferty at an ECEA enduro the week before, Jeff Melik was full of confidence, and he parlayed that into a 40-point day on his YZ250, edging Bobbitt on tie-breakers.

Now, it’s almost as if the season starts anew, with only the last four races left. Bobbitt knows he needs to stop the Lafferty express from rolling on and start collecting some wins if he wants to maintain his points lead and steal the crown from his older, more experienced teammate. To that end, he’ll spend the next two weeks before the next round in Ohio basing himself in the Buckeye State as he tries to get his bike set up for that area with mechanic Tony Hall.
