Ride along with Destry Abbott as he tackles round 1 of the 2009 Endurocross in Las Vegas Nevada………….

Qualifying:

All the racers in the night show had one lap to go out there, by themselves, and put in their fastest lap time. This would determine everyone’s gate pick and heat race. I put in a smooth lap, and was tied for the 4th fastest with Colton Haaker. Taddy Blasuziak was the fastest, and then Rick Dietrich was second.

Heat 1:

They only take the top two out of this race to go to the main. I knew I had a pretty stacked heat and it wasn’t going to be easy. When the gate fell, I was right there at the first corner. Ricky D went a little wide and gave me the inside. I was in the lead, but had pressure most of the first lap. On the second lap I had a little gap, but went down on a rock corner (that I struggled with all night). I went from first to 4th! Antoine Meo and I had a great battle going back and forth for third, but we couldn’t catch Dietrich or Lanza who took the top two spots.

Semi 1:

In this race they only took first to the main and I still had a lot of great riders to contend with. I was able to get another great start when Antoine went down in front of me. I lead the whole race, but Bobby Prochnau kept pressure on me for most of it. I was happy to take the win and move into the main event!

Main Event:

I didn’t have the best gate pick, because I came out of the semi. However once the gate dropped, I had the elbows out and pushed my way into 3rd after the second corner. Taddy and Ricky were right in front of me off the start. For the first three laps, I stayed in 3rd and then made my first big mistake in the infamous rock corner. I had quite a few people pass me when I was trying to restart my bike. The worst part was that as soon as I got going again, I realized my front end was really twisted. I didn’t want to stop and waste time fixing it, so I just kept going so I wouldn’t lose more positions. I think it was the very next lap I went down again. I was really struggling going over the logs and rocks with my bars pointing straight and my wheel pointing to the side. After I went down again I tried to fix the front end, but it just helped a little. I kept plugging along in the race, but just couldn’t get back into the flow. I ended up with a disappointing 10th.

Main Event Results:

1st Taddy Blasuziak

2nd Ricky Dietrich

3rd Mike Brown

4th Geoff Aaron

5th Colton Haaker

6th Kyle Redmond

7th Cory Graffunder

8th Jamie Lanza

9th Damon Huffman

10th Destry Abbott

11th Matt Crouch

12th Nick Brozovich

Overall Summary:

I was super pumped to make it into the main event, but once I was in I really wanted to be in the top 5. I was happy with my speed and the 250F was perfect for this race. I just made some dumb mistakes and it just kind of snowballed from there. After picking up the bike, a few times, I was beat! I really don’t need to change anything on the bike, I just need to work on a few other things before the next EX race I do.

Other Notes:

What an exciting race. I could hear the crowd in the main event and I knew something big was happening up front. I finally got to watch some of the highlights of the race and it was awesome! This is a must see video from the opening round http://shotmakerproductions.com/?p=663&preview=true .

I really would love to do the whole series, but three of the six rounds conflict with other races I’m doing. I might try and race the next round, and then the final one in November.

At the final race in Las Vegas (November 21), I’m going to have one big section. I’ll be selling tickets where everyone can sit together (around 60 tickets). They’re going to be the same price as listed, but you’ll be getting one of my t-shirts and some other goodies. I know I had a lot of people talk to me about this and I’m finally going to do it. I’ll be posting more on my site here soon.

Everyone that put the event on did and awesome job. They really know how to run a first class operation and the course was really good too! I was amazed at the turnout. It was a lot bigger than last year and I know this series is going to take off here soon.

One of the big events during Saturday was seeing Josh Morros race. It’s amazing to see how far he’s come since his crash. He really did awesome and looked smooth the whole time. I know he would’ve liked to have done better, but it will come back with time. Great job Josh!!!

On September 13th I’ll be doing my ISDE fundraiser out at Grindingstone again. It was awesome last year, and I plan to make it even better this year. I’ll be posting the flyer up on my message board next week. Hope to see you guys there. It’s for a great cause! Go USA! J

I need to really thank Jonny Weisman and Cody Call for all their help getting my race bike ready. We did a lot of testing and it really helped for the race.

My next race will be this weekend up in Elma, Washington for the WORCS round.

I attached some photos from Brad Bentley and a few from Mike Farmer. Thanks guys!

Best Wishes,

The American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) has announced the rosters for the U.S. Women’s Trophy Team, the U.S. Junior Trophy Team and the members of the U.S. club teams that will carry the banner for American off-road racing honor at the 2009 International Six Days Enduro (ISDE) in Figueria da Foz, Portugal, Oct. 12-17.

In addition, Timmy Weigand will replace the injured Nathan Woods on the U.S. World Trophy Team, which will contest the World Trophy Team Championship. Woods was injured while competing in round six of the World Off-Road Championship Series (WORCS).

“We’re thrilled that these world-class riders are joining the ISDE effort as part of Team USA,” said AMA President and CEO Rob Dingman. “Campaigning the ISDE takes skill and dedication. It’s not only six days of the toughest motorcycle racing on the planet, but months of preparation to get there. The AMA members who have stepped up to race for America at the 85th ISDE rank among this country’s most-talented riders and we look forward to supporting them in Portugal this October.

“We’re also happy to welcome Timmy Weigand to the U.S. World Trophy Team and wish Nathan a speedy recovery,” Dingman added.

Weigand, who will be representing the United States at the ISDE for the first time, rides for Johnny Campbell Racing, primarily in the AMA-sanctioned World Off-Road Championship Series. The other members of the U.S. World Trophy Team, which was announced in March, include Destry Abbott, Kurt Caselli, Ricky Dietrich, Jimmy Jarrett and Nathan Kanney.

“Kurt called me a week and a half ago and said I was in the running, then Johnny (Campbell) called me the next day and said I was selected and that he would be fully supporting me,” Weigand said. “This is going to be a lot of hard work, but a great experience and a great time. The team is solid. We got a podium last year, and we hope to do better than that. I’m the new guy, but hopefully I can ride smart. I have some good teachers in Kurt and Johnny.”

Weigand says the focus right now is getting the bike ready to ship to Portugal.

“I’ll be riding a Honda CRF250 in the E1 class,” he said. “Right now it’s a mad dash to get it ready. The bike has to be on the container in Portland in two weeks. As for setup, we’re definitely going for reliability. The bike is going to be pretty much stock so it can last the entire six days without a ton of work. I’m just happy to be going. It’s great to ride for your country at a major event like the ISDE.”

The U.S. Junior Trophy Team fields four riders 23 years old or younger. Led by five-time ISDE veteran Team Captain David Kamo, the Junior Trophy Team also will include defending AMA/Rekluse National Enduro Champion Russell Bobbitt, Grand National Cross Country racer Cory Buttrick and WORCS racer Jamie Lanza.

“We have the team we wanted to have,” said Kamo, who’s currently leading the points for the 2009 AMA Racing National Hare & Hound Championship. “It’s a strong team. We have an enduro racer, a WORCS racer, a GNCC racer and a desert racer. Russell is super fast, Jamie will never give up, and Cory, as well as he’s going in the GNCCs this year, he deserves to be there. As for me, I’m just happy to be on the team and, honestly, I hope those guys ride so well that I’m our drop-out rider. If I’m the drop-out rider, that just means everyone else is riding strong.”

Current plans call for Lanza to race the E1 class, which features 100cc to 125cc two-stroke and 175cc to 250cc four-stroke motorcycles; Bobbitt and Buttrick to race the E2 class, which features 175cc to 250cc two-stroke and 290cc to 450cc four-stroke motorcycles; and Kamo to ride the E3 class, which features 290cc to 500cc two-stroke and 475cc to 650cc four-stroke motorcycles.

The U.S. Women’s Trophy Team finished second in Greece last year to the French team, a year after winning the Women’s World Cup in Chile. The team will include veterans Maria Forsberg, Mandi Mastin and Lacy Jones.

“I am extremely excited to be going to Portugal this year representing the United States Women’s Trophy Team,” Mastin said. “This will be the eighth ISDE that I have competed in and the third since the Women’s World Team was created. I consider it a great honor to be involved in the race and look forward to going to Portugal healthy and ready to bring home the trophy again this year. Maria proved last year in Greece that she has what it takes to compete with some of the fastest women in the world, and Lacy is also a returning member to the team with two ISDE experiences. The three of us plan on working as hard as we can to win the Women’s World Trophy again this year.”

While the Trophy Team, the Women’s Trophy Team and the Junior Trophy Team are a critical piece of the U.S. effort, they are a small part of the entire U.S. contingent that makes the trek to the annual event. Dozens of club team riders will also represent the U.S. at the 2009 ISDE.

The following riders were selected as club team members: Toby Atkins, David Booth, Jordan Brandt, Joel Burkett, Billy Burns, Nick Fahringer, Jeff Fredette, Don Grahn, Nick Hamill, Fred Hoess, Zach Lipana, Brent Martell, Garrett Mayer, Shawn O’Leary, Ryan Powell, Ben Smith, Brian Sperle, Rory Sullivan, Troy Swettenam, Lars Valin and Chilly White.

America’s motorcyclists can help support Team USA, and looking good while doing it, by buying an official Team USA ISDE T-Shirt. All proceeds support the massive effort to transport the riders, bikes and crew to and from Portugal. To buy a shirt, just visit AmericanMotorcyclist.com, click on Gear, then select Apparel.

Some big changes went down a few months ago in the world of off-road racing, starting with the World Off Road Championship Series (WORCS) picking up an AMA sanction. Along with that sanction, WORCS Promoter Sean Reddish also picked up the AMA Western Hare Scrambles Series (WHS) – a budding program that was struggling to stand on its own.

In 2008, the WHS was, at best, a collection of club races strung together with an “AMA National” logo on it – and hats-off to those hard-working clubs who made it happen last year – but the series still had a way to go in terms of becoming a true national-caliber program.

The American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) announced today the 2009 schedule for the AMA National Hare & Hound Championship Series. The AMA National Hare & Hound Championship Series is composed of AMA Sports-sanctioned events and is one of the premier off-road racing series in the country. The series gives both amateur competitors and the country’s fastest desert racers a place to race.

“Working with local promoters, we’ve put together a 2009 schedule that offers some excellent racing opportunities across some of the most-challenging desert terrain in the country,” said AMA Off-Road Director Chuck Weir. “With three rounds scheduled for the fall, the traditional summer break will include the suspense of who will be our class champions. This will bring more interest to these later rounds and encourage more racers and fans to come out and enjoy the sport in the second half of the year.”

In recent years, the AMA National Hare & Hound Championship Series has featured just one fall round. That meant the class winners, including the overall national champion, were often decided before heading into the long summer break. This year’s calendar is structured so that’s unlikely to happen.

The 2009 AMA National Hare & Hound Championship Series will begin on Jan. 25 at the Johnson Valley Off-Highway Vehicle Area near Lucerne, California. The seven-round championship will wrap up on Oct. 31 in Jericho, Utah. The complete schedule is below.

Brea, CA (August 6, 2008) – American Suzuki Motor Corporation (ASMC) announced today that they have signed current AMA Supercross Champion, Chad Reed, to join the Rockstar Makita Suzuki factory race team for 2009. Reed will race the 2009 AMA Supercross series and other selected events in the United States as well as compete in supercross events in his home country of Australia aboard his Suzuki EFI RM-Z450.

“We have a great heritage in racing here at American Suzuki,” said Mel Harris of ASMC. “Suzuki has been dominant in the road racing arena for several years and with the introduction of the RM-Z450 and the help of Ricky Carmichael, Roger DeCoster and our dedicated team, we’ve been able to elevate our position in supercross and motocross to that championship level. The signing of Chad helps us reinforce our position and goals for the future of Suzuki racing. We are very happy to have Chad join our team.”

Chad Reed, 26, began racing professionally in the United States in 2002 and since then he’s earned two AMA Supercross Championships (2004 & 2008), an AMA 125cc East Region Championship (2002) and won the 2004 US Open. Over the last six years he has amassed a total of 42 AMA wins and 82 podiums.

“I’m extremely excited to be starting a new chapter in my career and to be working with Roger DeCoster and Team Rockstar Makita Suzuki,” said Reed. “It will be a whole new experience for me which I’m really looking forward to. I rode Suzukis for a good part of my amateur career and have some great memories from then and now I’m excited to be racing the new Suzuki EFI RM-Z450. I believe this bike and my new team have great potential and I couldn’t be happier.”

“I am very excited to have been able to sign Chad Reed to Team Rockstar Makita Suzuki,” said team manager, Roger DeCoster. “Our team has worked very hard to get to the level we are at today and I’m glad we’ve been able to secure a rider with such accomplishments and determination as Chad so that we may continue to be top contenders. Our sponsors have been extremely supportive over the years and I’m happy that we are able to provide them a top-level rider and team to support him.”

Reed’s first race with Team Rockstar Makita Suzuki will most likely be the Rockstar Energy Drink US Open at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas on October 10th through 12th.
